Modern Dance captured on Film: Pina [Jan 21, 2012]
"Pina masterfully captures the essence of Bausch's work and sets a new benchmark for the depiction of dance on film" (TIFF.net)
If you have a chance, check out Pina, the documentary about the German choreographer, shot in beautiful locales and featuring some of Pina Bausch's original company members. It is currently playing at the TIFF lightbox at King and John (near Roy Thompson Hall). //Globe and Mail// review of the film.

Haiger alumnuus, Martha Schabas, author of Various Positions will be visiting Earl Haig Secondary Library on Monday Dec. 5th, 2011 during periods 1 and 2 in the new Window Lab. If you are not in a class that has been asked to attend, please see a teacher-librarian to get permission for period 1 or 2 that day.

◙From the //Toronto Star// Review of Schabas' novel **(click here)**:

"At 14, Georgia, our narrator, is at a perilous age. Friendless,
frightened by her schoolmates’ party game — “chicken,” a nasty advance on spin the bottle — she is saved one March day by a letter from the prestigious Royal Toronto Ballet Academy. A successful audition promises escape from her parents’ war of attrition — her physician father mostly absent, her teacher mother mostly sad — and, ideally, from puberty itself."

**This novel is recommended for senior students.

  • Thursday is Parent-Teacher interviews. If you are getting less than 70 in the course, it is highly recommended that you attend with your parents to develop an action plan for success in the English course!

  • Closing date: Feb 1st, 2012
  • You must be an Ontario high school student to enter
  • Three (3) authors will write story-starters (What’s that? A story-starter is a couple of sentences or a paragraph that provides students with a place to start their story, but where the story goes from there is in the hands of each individual student)
  • Entries will be judged by Authors at Harbourfront Centre, in conjunction with Open Book Ontario
  • There will be four (4) winners selected, one (1) from each grade of high school
  • One submission per student will be accepted and entries will not be returned
  • Only entries submitted online via writeacrossontario@harbourfrontcentre.com will be accepted
